Training for Scout and Adults
For Scouts – Merit Badge Clinics
Clinics are held in the Redmond area on the second Saturday of each month and the second Thursday of each month. You should obtain blue cards from the Scoutmaster for these and return completed blue cards to the troop Advancement Chair. Details are here:

Some troop meetings will include merit badge work. Also summer camp and merit badge weekend camps are good opportunities. You can also ask about merit badge counselors who work with the troop.
For Adults – Merit Badge Counselor Training
If you are interested in becoming a merit badge counselor, you will need an adult leader form from the troops membership coordinator. You will also need to complete this form (34405) and you need to submit a certificate of completion for Youth Protection Training. For Adults – Assistant Scoutmaster Training
Troop 557 encourages parents to become an Assistant Scoutmaster and to help the troop by planning and leading some outdoor activities. The following are required to be an Assistant Scoutmaster.
1. Complete an adult leader application form and be approved by the committee
o The Boy Scouts of America will conduct a background check.
2. Required online reading material
3. Purchase a scout uniform
o Shirt and basic patches
o Pants – not required but good for hiking since they contain no cotton
4. Complete the Five Training Elements
You can be an Assistant Scoutmaster with just the online training, but you wont get your “Trained” patch until in person training is complete.
1. Youth Protection Training – available online
2. Fast Start Training – available online
3. This is Scouting Training – available online (replaces new leader essentials)
4. Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training – One Saturday
5. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills – One Saturday and a following Friday evening / Saturday

Uniforms are available at these locations. Patches and other supplies are also available at the Seattle scout store.
